Judith and her Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes

Dublin Core

Title

Judith and her Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes

Subject

This painting depicts the same theme as Judith and her maidservant created by Artemisia Gentilischi. Orazio uses a different color scheme but depicts the same image as Artemisia.

Description

This painting was thought to be commissioned by someone of high stature due to the colors and pigments used. The blue sleeve in the painting was done by using a pure form of Lazurite. This ultramarine color was extremely expensive, and was generally used to resemble holiness and pride. Additionally, the jewelry and clothing portrayed shows expensive taste.
